After a last year's wildly successful and well-received event at Goodwood, Vintage Festival returns this year in its new home on London's Southbank.
Encompassing over five decades of British creativity and cool, Vintage is the ultimate celebration of music, fashion and much more from the 40s through to the late 80s and beyond. Exploring our musical, design and cultural lineages, Vintage is at once a festival of Britain and a history of modern Britain. Whether your thing is swing, rockabilly, mod, soul, funk, disco, ska, electro, cabaret, film, art or design, or if you just want to dress up and get an authentic make-over for a day, Vintage at Southbank Centre is a sensual delight, a big dressing-up box, a collector’s dream and a joyous creative feast for all ages.
Centred around the Royal Festival Hall and founded and curated by duo Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway, this years event is set to be very special indeed. Listed below are just some of IDOL's picks of the weekend....
Live sets from Mirrors, Thee Vicars, The Caezars as well as a special appearance from Adam Ant alongside DJs Princess Julia and Jeffrey Hinton from the Original Blitz Club are set to be stand outs. Legendary Manchester nightclub Warehouse is also being resurrected in the depths of the Southbank centre to allow people to re-live the early rave days of the late 80s! Also of note amongst the incredible DJ line-up is Graeme Park, one of the original DJs to champion House music in the UK who has provided an amazing mix ahead of his sets at vintage which can be listened to here...
Clothes are of course set to be a centrepiece and the Vintage Marketplace is unquestionably going to get people fighting over rare clothes and accessories all weekend. From couture labels to pret-a-porter and street style, this market will stock it. An eclectic and dazzling array of catwalk shows will also be taking place with the likes of Pearl and Daisy Lowe and Jo Wood showcasing designs from Vivienne Westwood and Mary Quant. We've also got our eyes firmly fixed on the fashion workshops to get all the gents looking like Don Draper in no time.
On the art and film front team IDOL won't be missing a remarkable line-up of Ealing Classics and cult TV put together by the BFI as well as a sweeping exhibition of design from the 1920's through to the late 80s.
This is just a fraction of some of the events occurring at Vintage and it's easy to see why it's creating such a buzz. Keep checking the blog for regular updates and news on Vintage in the coming weeks....
