I heard about this place and to be honest I was a bit curious and scared at the same time to go there. Dominque Raclin, the General Manager, welcomed and explained us about the ethos behind the project (note: that I said project, not restaurant). Dans le noir ? is not the typical restaurant- for those who doesn’t know “Dans le noir” means “in the darkness” and its name indicates you have dinner in the pitch dark. Dans le noir ? changes our preconceptions. Here, disability is seen as a positive difference. All the waiters (AKA guides) are blind, your guide is the only person that will and can help you once you are inside the restaurant. The blind become your eyes and ultimately your light, a radical reversal of perspective that encourages tolerance and respect. The disabled become the able and viceversa. This experience “opens your eyes” to a whole new world of sensations. A temporary glimpse at the reality of blindness that will change you and your opinion about this “other” world forever.

In every single restaurant, at least 40% of the staff is blind presenting long time opportunities for people that we considered “disabled.” But as Dominique explained to us “its not that we are giving them an opportunity, it's exactly the opposite, without them we wouldn’t be here.”
